A Mother's Gift, and a Giveaway

Sunday, May 13 is Mother's Day in the United States.  I want to pay tribute to my mother, Melita. She was a kindergarten teacher and our home was always filled with art supplies. She was always crafting or doodling and took adult education classes in drawing and painting. She taught the Arts and Crafts badge for my Brownie troop -  we made papier mache sculptures.  Macrame plant holders, beaded flowers -- every craft du jour happened in our house. She would have really liked my new art studio! Melita loved creating things and giving them away for others to enjoy. This Mother's Day, I'm honoring the joy and spirit she had for art by giving away a painting. Share a positive "MOM" comment on this blog post at my website and you'll be entered. Make sure you are on my email list so I can contact you if you win!

What an inspiring story about you and your mother. Clearly, the acorn didn't fall very far from that tree as her inspiration has taken root in your talents.

My mother brought home bits and pieces of exotic fabrics, beautiful trims, sequins, beads, and silk flowers from her millinery workroom for me to use for my dolls' clothes and houses that I sewed and built. And another acorn fell close to the tree!

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Happy Mother's Day to you, Linda. A wonderful coincidence in my life is that my Mother and I became "mothers" for the first time on the same day, June 13th! So, my husband and I named our daughter after both my husband's mother and mine.I feel so lucky that my 86 year old mother, Jean McDonough Brown is active and well. With gratitude. Maureen

What a wonderful photo of you and your mom...and what a legacy she passed on to you! We don't realize until we're older the real gifts our moms give to us. As I raise my son, I see everyday the lessons of motherhood she passed on to me that I didn't recognize (and certainly didn't appreciate!) at the time.

Gifts are in disguise everywhere! When I was a teenager, my mother said to me "I hope you have children someday so you can know what you are putting me through..." :-)

We all have so much to be thankful for.
My mom's mom died when she was 5 and raised mostly by her sisters. My mom, Millie (Mildred) was a wonderful mother and taken to soon in my young life. She gave so much of herself to my sister and I. I understand why she was so protective of us. Because of this and all she instilled, I became as independent as I have. As years pass I have more questions for her. I remember holding her hand each time I left thinking it was the last time.
Happy mother's day to my friends.

Linda, Your blog and the comments are really heart-warming. I love the sweet photo. I, too, had a great mom that still inspires me. She worked as a librarian, and also kept up a household with 5 kids! She loved to read and bake. She supported me in all my artistic endeavors...from kindergarten to college and beyond. I miss her and wish she was still around for my kids know. But, alas, that's life. :) Happy Mother's Day to all...

I guess it's our job to pass along the good wisdom and spirit to the next generations. Have a wonderful Mother's Day, Judy!

Happy Mother's Day to you Linda. My Mom (and Dad) will be here for Mother's Day this year to celebrate together. We have had many mother's day celebrations together and hope we have more to share as well. Enjoy!

Jean, here's how I remember your mother - smiling, tan, fit and in a swimsuit at the lake. Make sure you tell her that! Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day, Linda! I love your photo and story, and have enjoyed reading the stories of those who've already shared their comments. Reading everything that's been said so far reminds me that sometimes our "mothers" come from unexpected places, in unexpected packages. Sometimes we are "mothered" by our friends. Sometimes, when our own mothers can't be there others step in to fill that void. They may be relatives, foster-mothers, friends, teachers .... what's common is that whether blood flows between the two or not, the absence of our own mothers is perhaps slightly less keenly felt by the presence of another who cares deeply for us, celebrates our joys with us and offers us safe haven in difficult times. Here's to all those who have, whether for moments or for years, stepped forward to "mother" another whose birth mother was no longer able to do so herself.

In the movie, "Hook," which my boys watched many times - little Wendy says to Peter Pan, "You need a mother...very badly!"

Pam, your comment is much more eloquent -- sometimes we all do need a "mother" and however that mothering appears, we can give thanks for those who stepped in to play the role.

What a wonderful picture and story about you and your mom - no wonder you are so creative! I loved reading your story and those of the others who have shared theirs. My mom worked as an organic chemist and later in my Dad's business, but still found the time to cook, bake bread, make soup, grow fruits and vegetables for homemade jam and preserves, milk the cows, goats and sheep to make cheeses - AND serve as a School Board Member, Girl Scout leader and baseball team manager, all while making sure to keep three kids in line at school and with our farm chores. I've really come to appreciate how much she accomplished after I had my own family. But it would be nice if I could beat her in Scrabble when I visit her in Florida once in a while! :)

I wish I could have known my beautiful grandmother Melita<3 She must have been such an amazing mother to raise such creative and successful children whom I respect and admire so much.  I'm so blessed to have my strong, loving mother now and it warms my heart to know my father and aunt had an amazing mother as well.

OK ladies, nepotism aside -- my niece Chelsea wins the painting because her entry made me cry more...

Happy Mother's Day to you all!
