I think I always wanted to be a visual artist. But, when I was thirteen years old, my closest friend was an artist. Only one artist was allowed in that friendship, so I became the writer and headed off into a career in marketing and communications. She became the artist and is now a fabulous and famous jewelry designer. And, yes, she is still my dear friend.

Fast forward a whole bunch of years. My husband and I began collecting California landscape paintings in celebration of birthdays and anniversaries. I wanted to learn how to make those marks and find those colors. I knew it was in me, so I bought oil paints and brushes. I was truly afraid to open a tube because "I didn't know how," so hundreds of dollars of supplies sat unopened for a year. One day, while talking to a gallery owner, I learned that an artist whose paintings we owned had just opened a school. I signed up for classes the next day.

Discovery is an amazing journey, and I am grateful for the encouragement of my family, friends and teachers, and for the early collectors who responded so enthusiastically. Thank you all.
